the sounds of earth

I love the visuals on these records that were sent out to space. The concept would be perfect for the starkey album, however, I'll need to manipulate and experiment with the symbols used on the golden record.

The Voyager Golden Records are phonograph records which were included aboard both Voyager spacecraft, which were launched in 1977. They contain sounds and images selected to portray the diversity of life and culture on Earth, and are intended for any intelligent extraterrestrial life form, or for future humans, who may find them. The Voyager spacecrafts are not heading towards any particular star, but Voyager 1 will be within 1.6 light years of the star Gliese 445 in the Ophiuchus constellation in about 40,000 years.
As the probes are extremely small compared to the vastness of interstellar space, the probability of a space-faring civilization encountering them is very small, especially since the probes will eventually stop emitting any kind of electromagnetic radiation. If they are ever found by an alien species, it will most likely be far in the future as the nearest star on Voyager 1's trajectory will only be reached in 40,000 years.

kaleidoscope

I found this publication, Patrick Anderson 'kaleidescope', which has got some beautiful imagery of reflected scenes. Manipulating the ink images I've taken may create some interesting visuals for me and thee.

vinyls

I found some really interesting vinyl designs that have a strong applicaton of type and image. A lot have them use block colouring with simple shapes creating really interesting aesthetics.

chanel

I really like this fold out publication for chanel. Interactive design really works in terms of getting the audience involved and the imagery used for this works really nicely. It also has a very interesting binding..

space

I found some amazing images from space to inspire my colour application for the textiles. Picking out colours from these will allow me to explore different combinations.

The texture & luminosity in these images is something I'd like to try and achieve when dying and experimenting with the fabrics..

album artwork

Richard Robinson studio designed the album artwork for Molly Wagger, Tirk Records. The experimentation with colour, photography and textures caught my eye as it's something that inspires me to get more creative with textile design.

Amy Sia

"Amy Sia is a London based textile print designer dedicated to creating unique and vibrant artwork. Following success with other product ranges, Amy's love of fashion and her background as a fashion designer led her to launch an affordable and individual silk scarf range. Her artwork is now translated into scarves that can be treasured and worn.

The range was launched in 2012 with a selection of silk scarves that are made in the UK, celebrating British craftsmanship. Each scarf showcases Amy's distinctive style. The designs are created through a blend of modern and traditional techniques. The designs are often created using a combination of painting, drawing, photography and computer aided design. The scarves are printed digitally allowing for designs and colour combinations not possible in traditional printing processes."

I really enjoy the use of colour in these textile designs by Amy Sia. The composition works really nicely as it's very expressive and each scarf has lovely vibrancy.

textile design

My main source of inspiration has come from Richard Robinson studio. The studio created a range of textile design & editorial for fashion designer Louise-Amstrup (http://louise-amstrup.com/)

The deigns are very image based with a strong application of photography, texture and colour. This is definitely the direction I want to take with brief in which I'm collaborating with Liv Chapman.

Erwina Ziomkowska

Really simple but effective use of paper. As we want to incorporate light into the exhibition I think this sort of thing would work really well.

For the exhibition I think the use of back-lighting with will exploit the paper quality. It would also be an effective way to display the range of different weights and colours.

eva black

Eva Black created these really interesting hanging paper pyramids, nice use of paper to create geometric shapes. She used old maps, artworks, paper bags, books etc so has a range of stock.

Could be interesting to apply different stocks within the sculptured designs in order to display the Fedrigoni range.

Riki Moss

I wanted to look more into lighting of paper sculptures. Studio Glow was an instillation that beautifully illumintaes the sculptural designs, highlighting the dynamic details of the surface in high relief.

more Matthew Shlian

I came across some of Matthew's older work and thought that this light book was a strong idea that could fit into the exhibition really well. Using light will explore the weights of the paper, looking at quality and transparency.

This light book measures a 8 x 8 x 1/2 inches, however, we'd be looking at a large scale within the exhibitions for impact and interaction.

Movement

This video has given me several ideas for moving sculptures within the exhibition. I think this will create a vital interaction between the public and the fedrigoni paper. It also exploits the versatility of the stock. With some strong lighting with these pieces and an increase in scale they could potentially be really striking...

Matthew Shlian

Really nice cut out flip book by Matthew Shlian. Here the paper has been combined with illustration in an effective way using abstract shaping, movement and dimensions.

Richard Sweeney

Richard studied at Batley School of Art and Design, which led him to the study of three dimensional design at the Manchester Metropolitan University. There he concentrated on the hands-on manipulation of paper to create design models, which ultimately developed into sculptural pieces.

These definitely inspire me in terms of setting up an exhibition for Fedrigoni. They're quite interactive pieces in which you could walk around and really appreciate the paper crafting. It could be interesting to have a range of sculpture pieces like this using different weighted/coloured stocks.

advertisement prices

I found some prices for advertisements to be placed in a magazine HOWEVER, we must take into account that we would be a new up-coming magazine and so companies may be less inclined to place their adds in our magazine compared to other more highly-purchased magazines.

shapes & perspective

I've been looking the effect of using a 2-dimensional shape to create the illusion of a 3-dimensional image. "Perspective" in the graphic arts, such as drawing, is an approximate representation, on a flat surface, of an image as it is seen by the eye. The two most characteristic features of perspective are that objects are drawn:
/Smaller as their distance from the observer increases
/Foreshortened: the size of an object's dimensions along the line of sight are relatively shorter than dimensions across the line of sight

yes

YES collaborated with Peter Saville on the art direction and design for the retrospective exhibition of Yohji Yamamoto's work.

I love the visual set up that YES has done for this collaboration. I like the simplicity of the design as it allows the Yohji's work to speak for itself as well as creating a particular 'look' for the label.

the good life

This music video is a good example of kinetic typography with sound. Kanye is actually interacting with the type itself. There's a rage of different visuals within this video, such as type running through his glasses. The colour also sits nicely on the black & white video making it more appealing and emphasizing the type/lyrics.
